The Annual conference serves as a flagship event for Bruegel’s long-lasting European research-to-action initiative - Future of Work and Inclusive Growth project.

At this all-day high-level event we look at some of the most urgent issues faced by workers and policymakers in today's fast-evolving labour market.

From identifying the necessary skills demanded by the AI and green sectors, through examining the impact of technology adoption on labour markets, to addressing the growing inequality brought on by digitalisation of capital, the conference provided a diversity of perspectives and potential policy solutions.

The dual challenges of artificial intelligence integration and sustainability goals demand joint efforts from workers, firms and policy makers. The European Commission projects that the uptake of AI skills could add approximately €2.5 trillion to European GDP by 2030, and the European Green Deal, a comprehensive plan for making Europe the world's first climate-neutral continent, sets ambitious targets that require a skilled workforce adept at sustainable practices. At this panel, we will delve into the European policy landscape, the role of European industries in the twin transition, and the ongoing efforts to equip the workforce with the necessary skills demanded by the AI and green sectors.

From automation to artificial intelligence, emerging technologies are reshaping the labour markets significantly. While they bring about increased productivity and efficiency, they also pose significant challenges to the workforce. In this session, we will discuss how increasing technology adoption is changing the EU labour markets. The focus will extend beyond the creation and transformation of jobs, as we also examine consequences of job displacement. Finally, we will offer input on the opportunities of the changing skills demand.

The ongoing process of technological change, and in particular, digitalisation, is profoundly reshuffling occupations and changing labour markets. Digital technologies expand the set of tasks performed by capital. That can displace certain workers from employment opportunities and benefit other, mostly high-skilled, workers and capital owners. As a consequence, inequalities will increase. How does technological change impact the distribution of income and wealth? What best practices have been adopted by governments and corporations to foster equity? What else should governments do?
