Energy market developments in the UK

This was a presentation and discussion on energy market developments in the United Kingdom. The UK has been on the forefront of electricity and gas market liberalization in Europe. Recently, the UK seems to have shifted focus to ensuring security of supply. Some observers see this as heralding a paradigm shift throughout the union.

This event was part of a Bruegel event series entitled: “Energy and Climate Exchange series 2012: member states energy market developments.” In this monthly series, panelists from different member states present on the burning issues being discussed in their country and on how national energy policies impact the single energy market.

This event covered the energy market developments in the United Kingdom. David Newbery, of the University of Cambridge, one of the foremost academic experts in the field of energy economics, spoke on the developments in the UK. Martin Crouch, a Partner at Ofgem responsible for leading the team which provides Ofgem’s input into the development of competitive and sustainable European energy markets, offered insight into a regulator’s perspective. Finally, Tim Abraham, of DECC in the UK government, provided the motivations for the developments from the policymaker’s perspective.
