Maria Martin-Prat

María Martin-Prat is the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the European Union to the World Trade Organization.
Before taking up her position, Ms Martin-Prat was Deputy Director-General in the Directorate-General responsible for Trade and Economic Security in the European Commission. In that position she led the teams responsible for bilateral trade and investment relations with countries in Asia, the Pacific, Africa and the Caribbean. She also led the work of the teams responsible for Sustainable Development and Green Deal trade related issues, Services and Digital Trade, Investment and Intellectual Property. Her career in the Commission also covers Internal Market policies having been the Head of the Unit responsible for Free Movement of Services and Freedom of Establishment, and the Head of the Copyright Unit in the European Commission. She was also Member of the Cabinet of Commissioner Joaquin Almunia.
Ms Martin-Prat has worked as a lawyer in the private sector and in the European Parliament.
Ms Martin-Prat holds a master’s in law from the University of Seville in Spain and has two postgraduate degrees in European Law (from the Institute of European Studies of the ULB in Brussels and from the European Institute of the University of Amsterdam).
