Maria Abascal
Head Economist, Regulation and Public Policies, BBVA,
María Abascal has been Chief Economist for Regulation and Public Policy in BBVA Research since June 2010. She has over 10 years of experience in dealing with economic, financial and regulatory issues in both the private and the public sector.
In 2005 she became civil servant by joining the body Técnicos Comerciales y Economistas del Estado, a very senior group of Economists of the State. Between 2006 and 2009 she occupied various positions within the Spanish Treasury. In 2009 she was appointed Deputy Director for Strategic and Financial Analysis in the Directorate General of the Treasury and Financial Policy, attached to the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Finance - she held this position until June 2010.
She was Senior Advisor for the Chief Executive Officer of the Spanish Institute for Foreign Trade (ICEX ) between 2005 and 2006. She was Professor in the Masters in Financial Markets at Icade during 2o07 and 2008. Since 2013 she has been part of the teaching faculty for the IEB Executive Masters in Management of Financial Entities. She is the author of many economic articles in specialised journals.
