Richard Boscovich on how to address cybersecurity

Richard Boscovich, Assistant General Counsel at Microsoft, acted as a speaker during the event "Addressing cybersecurity" held at Bruegel on June 5. In this video he speaks to Karen Wilson, Senior Fellow at Bruegel, about how to address cyber risks.

Boscovich explains that updating software and running an updated antivirus are the best solutions to prevent risks. "These two things alone would eliminate more than 90 percent of the problems," he points out.

What is the next generation of cybersecurity? And, at some point, will the cost start outweighing the benefits? Consumers in the future will be more secure than they currently are, Boscovich assures.

"One of the great things that is happening in the industry is cloud computing. From a consumer angle, a lot of the issues that we see are still basic problems of computer hygiene. In the cloud world, the hardware connects to the cloud and the cloud updates the software and antivirus automatically. This process will be managed by professionals 24/7."

Boscovich and Wilson also focus on the role of policy in cybersecurity. One of the main issues, according to Boscovich, is the lack of a standard definition of cyber crime that is applicable across jurisdictions. "Having a more uniform approach regarding the definition of cyber crime is definitely a step in the right direction," he concludes.
