Shogo Tanaka

Mr. Shogo Tanaka is the Director of the Strategic Policy Planning Division at the Trade Policy Bureau. Born in Onojo City, Fukuoka Prefecture, he graduated from the University of Tokyo, Faculty of Economics, in 2001, after completing his high school education at Kagoshima La Salle High School.

He began his career at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in 2001, working across various divisions including the Statistical Planning and Analysis Division, Policy Evaluation and Public Relations, and the Small and Medium Enterprise Agency. Over the years, he held roles in the Cabinet Secretariat, the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, and the Commerce and Information Policy Bureau, focusing on policy planning, financial research, market development, and industrial revitalization. In 2008, he studied abroad at University College London, earning an MSc in Public Policy.

He later served in leadership positions, including Director of Supply and Demand Policy Office and Director of Strategic Planning Office at the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy. From 2020, he worked at the Japan External Trade Organization’s Berlin Office as Industrial Researcher and Deputy Director before returning to Japan as Director of Resource Circulation Economy Division in 2022. He assumed his current role as Director of the Strategic Policy Planning Division, Trade Policy Bureau, in 2025.
