Kevin Vella

Director General, Economic Policy Department, Ministry for Finance, Malta

Mr. Kevin Vella is the Director General at the Economic Policy Department, a position he has held since 2023. He currently represents Malta as an alternate member of the Economic and Financial Committee (EFC) and has previously represented Malta in the Economic Policy Committee (EPC).

Mr. Vella is also a member of the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD), a tripartite institution overseeing Malta’s economic and social development. In addition, he serves on the Malta Statistics Authority Board and the National Productivity Board.

Throughout his career, Mr. Vella has contributed to several national and EU-level initiatives. He was a member of the Financial Perspectives Malta Group, responsible for EU budget negotiations, and has also served on the Creative Economy Working Group and the Valletta 2018 Evaluation and Monitoring Committee. Beyond his professional duties, he is the Treasurer of the Equal Partners Foundation, a non-profit organisation supporting persons with disabilities and learning difficulties.

Mr. Vella holds a degree in Economics from the University of Warwick and also studied economics and public policy at the University of Malta. He joined the Economic Policy Department in 1999, was promoted to Senior Economist in 2006, and became Director (Economic Strategy) in 2011. Among his academic achievements, he completed the Financial Programming and Policies Programme at the IMF Institute in 2007.

In academia, Mr. Vella is a visiting lecturer at the Department of Economics, University of Malta, and has been lecturing economics at the Institute of Public Administration since 2004. He has co-authored several working papers and academic articles covering areas such as macroeconomic forecasting, debt dynamics, corporate financing, external competitiveness, public sector productivity, tourism, labour markets, and the creative economy.
