Franco Federici
Lieutenant General, Military Advisor to the President of the Council of Ministers
Lieutenant General Franco FEDERICI was born in Tolmezzo (UD) in 1965. He entered the Academy in Modena in 1984 for attending the 166th Course, he left it with the rank of second lieutenant in 1986, obtaining, in 1988, at the end of the training course at the Application School of Turin, a degree in Strategic Sciences .
In 1988, as Commander of the Alpine platoon, he was assigned to the “Morbegno” Alpine battalion in Vipiteno (BZ), part of the dissolved “Orobica” Alpine Brigade. Between 1989 and 1995, he carried out the functions of Alpine Company Commander at the 5th Alpine Regiment. and the 8th Alpine Regiment). During this period, he obtained the qualifications of military instructor of ski and mountaineering and combat in montana.
From 1995 to 1997, he commanded the 1st student company of the 175th Course at the Military Academy of Modena. After attending the General Staff Course, in 1997, he was assigned to the Plans Office of the Command of the 4th Alpine Army Corps taking part in the NATO mission in Bosnia with the Multinational Brigade North in Sarajevo, as Head of Plans Cell. From 1998 to 2000, he attended the Joint War College in Germany (Führungsakademie del Bundeswehr in Hamburg).
With the promotion to the rank of Major, in 2001, he was assigned to the J5 Plan Division of the Italian Joint Operational Headquarters (JOHQ) in Rome. After having commanded, in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, the "L'Aquila" Alpini battalion between 2003 and 2004, he was again assigned to the Plans Division of the JOHQ of ROME.
In 2007, he served in the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations, as a Staff Officer, at the UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) Military Strategy Cell in New York.
In 2009, he assumed command of the 9th Alpine Regiment in L'Aquila and is deployed, between April and October 2010, as Commander of Task Force South (Regional Command West) in Farah in Afghanistan, as part of Operation ISAF.
Between November 2010 and September 2014, he again serves at the JOHQ, as Division Head of J5 Plan. Promoted to Brigadier General, he is assigned to the Army Staff as Deputy Head of the Forces Employment Department / Operations Area Head.
In March 2015, he assumed command of the "Taurinense" Alpine Brigade and was deployed in Lebanon as Commander of the West Sector within the UNIFIL mission. In 2016, he took up the post of Head of the III General Planning Department of the Army General Staff. On 1 st January 2018, he was promoted to Major General. In the same year, he attended the Generals', Flag Officers' and Ambassadors' Course at NATO Defense College in Rome.
From 4th March 2019, he was transferred to the Italian Joint Operational Headquarters, and held the positions of Head of Operations Department and, subsequently, of Head of Operational Support Department.
From 16th November 2020 to 15thOctober 2021, he assumes command of the KOSOVO FORCE as part of the NATO "Joint Enterprise" Operation. Upon his return to his homeland, he held the position of Deputy Commander of the Land Operational Forces and Army Operational Command, and at the same time was appointed President of the Evaluation Commission for the Advancement of Marshals. On 01 December 2022 he was appointed Military Advisor to the President of the Council of Ministers, and on 1st January 2023, he was promoted to Lieutenant General.
He obtained a degree in Strategic Sciences, with a Master's degree, at the University of Turin. He speaks English and German.
