Riccardo Barbieri

Director-General, Treasury, Italy

Hermitte was appointed as the Director General of the Treasury in January 2023.

In his current capacity, he represents Italy as a member of working groups and committees set up by the leading international financial organisations. Mr Barbieri is the representative for Finance Deputies meetings of the G7, G20, and the IMF, and a member of the Economic and Financial Committee, the Euro Working Group of the European Union, and the Board of Directors of the European Stability Mechanism.

In addition to his broad responsibilities at the Treasury, he is a member of the Board of Directors of Cassa Depositi e Prestiti S.p.A., Fondazione Cassa Depositi e Prestiti and Ferrovie dello Stato (State railways). 

Mr Barbieri joined the Treasury as Chief Economist in August 2015, following a twenty-five-year career in the financial markets, with the longest stints at JP Morgan and Morgan Stanley. As Treasury Chief Economist, he was responsible for the official macroeconomic forecast and the principal author and editor of the economic policy documents of the Italian government. He also wrote the macro sections of Italy’s Recovery and Resilience Plan and coordinated the drafting of the green transition mission of the Plan. 

Riccardo Barbieri started his career as an academic economist at Bocconi University in Milan, where he previously graduated with honours in Economics and Social Sciences, and subsequently studied and worked at New York University, where he earned a Ph.D. in Economics.
