Iñigo Fernandez de Mesa

State Secretary for Economic Affairs and Support for Business, Spain,

Iñigo Fernandez de Mesa has recently been appointed as Secretary of State for Economic & Business Affairs and is a member of the Bruegel Board. He was born in Madrid in 1967, where he graduated in Economics from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. In January 2012 he became the Secretary General of the Spanish Treasury and Financial Policy and held this office until September 2014. In his capacity as Secretary General of the Spanish Treasury, he also was Vice President of the FROB (Fund for Orderly Bank Restructuring), Member of the Board of the Bank of Spain, and of the CNMV (National Securities Market), Alternate Member of Eurogroup, Member of the Euro Working Group (EWG) and of the Economic and Financial Committee (EFC), Spanish representative to the Financial Stability Board (FSB), Chairman of the Monitoring Committee of FADE (Electricity System Deficit Securitization Fund) and President of the Steering Committee of SAREB (Asset Management Company for Assets Arising from Bank Restructuring).

Iñigo Fernandez de Mesa has also held various responsibilities in the private sector. Thus, he was responsible for Public Sector and Infrastructure Funding at Lehman Brothers (2007-2008) and Managing Director of Barclays Capital (2007-2011).

Previously, from 1996 to 1999 he was Alternate Executive Director of the World Bank Group (representative of Spain, Mexico, Venezuela and Central America). From 1999-2006 he was Deputy Director General for Economic and Monetary European Affairs in the Treasury and  Deputy Director General for External Finance in the Ministry of Economy. Mr Fernández de Mesa has held many other public positions, among which: Member of the Boards of the European Investment Bank and Fund; Member of the EU Economic and Financial Committee or Head of the Spanish Delegation to the Paris Club.
