Maarten Pieter Schinkel

Maarten Pieter Schinkel (Ph.D. Universiteit Maastricht, 2001) is a professor of economics at the University of Amsterdam’s Faculty of Economics and Business. By affiliation, he is also a professor of law at the Faculty of Law. Schinkel is co-director of the Amsterdam Center for Law & Economics (ACLE) and coordinator of the master program Markets & Regulation at UvA. His research interests and teaching focus on industrial organization and regulation theory, in particular the enforcement of competition rules. His recent papers consider aspects of European competition law enforcement, including antitrust damages, public interest aspects of collusion and behavioral State aid conditions in mortgage banking. Dr. Schinkel has previously worked in history of economic thought and general equilibrium theory, in particular on questions concerning the behavior of economies outside of equilibrium. He held positions at the Duisenberg School of Finance (DSF), Maastricht University (The Netherlands), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge MA, USA), the College of Europe (Bruges, Belgium), Université de Liège (Belgium) and Universität Regensburg (Germany). Schinkel has published his work with international publishing houses, including Cambridge University Press, in national and international journals, including RAND Journal of Economics, European Economic Review, Journal of Industrial Economics, International Journal of Industrial Organization, Review of Industrial Organization, Antitrust Bulletin, Journal of Mathematical Economics, History of Political Economy, Journal of Regulatory Economics, Journal of Competition Law and Economics, World Competition and European Competition Law Review.

Dr. Schinkel occasionally acts as an expert on complex competition litigation matters, including as a Senior Consultant for Charles River Associates (CRA). He served in several public functions, including as Deputy Economic Counsel to the Board (Assistent Economisch Raadsadviseur), a temporary academic second with the Netherlands Competition Authority (NMa) in The Hague. Schinkel is a DAAD fellow, a NAF fellow, a Fulbright fellow, a Research Fellow of the Tinbergen Institute and a member of the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities.
