Luc Frieden

Luc Frieden, born in September 1963, has been Vice Chairman of Deutsche Bank Group since September 2014 and advises the Management Board on strategic aspects related to international and European affairs. He also works closely with the Government and Regulatory Affairs department as well as with the various business units of Deutsche Bank.

Frieden started off his career as an attorney at law in a major Luxembourg law firm where he specialised in business law. In 1994, at the age of thirty, he was elected to the national parliament of Luxembourg, where he chaired both the Constitutional Affairs and the Finance Committee. For most of his professional life, Frieden served in the Luxembourg government simultaneously as Minister of Justice and Minister of Budget and Treasury (1998 to 2009), as Minister of Defence (2004-2006), as well as Minister of Finance (2009-2013).

During the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2005, Frieden chaired the European Council of Ministers of Justice and Home Affairs. As Minister of Finance he represented his country at the European Council of Ministers of Finance (ECOFIN and Eurogroup) and participated in the stabilization of the Eurozone and the shaping of the European banking union. For 15 years, Luc Frieden served as Governor of the World Bank and acted as Chairman of the Board of Governors of the IMF and the World Bank Group in 2013.

Frieden graduated in law from the Université de Paris (Panthéon-Sorbonne). He also holds a Master of Comparative Law and Legal Philosophy from the University of Cambridge (UK) and Master of Laws from Harvard Law School in the US.

Besides his native tongue Luxembourgish, Frieden fluently speaks English, German and French and has a good working knowledge of Dutch. He is married and has two children.
