The changing role of the state in finance: a global perspective
The financial crisis since 2007-08 has transformed perceptions about the role of the state in finance, but, in Europe as elsewhere, properly calibrating this role remains a policy challenge. This session took advantage of the choice of this contentious theme by the World Bank for its recently published Global Financial Development Report (the first issue of a new yearly flagship series that will provide a complementary perspective to the International Monetary Fund’s Global Financial Stability Report, launched in 2002). The presentation of the report’s key findings served as the basis for a discussion of the EU’s orientation of its rapidly evolving financial-sector policy.
