Shaping a Genuine Economic and Monetary Union

This conference was organised by the Centre for European Affairs (CEA) in collaboration with Bruegel, the Institute of Financial Policy and the Ministry of Finance.

The event gathered together leaders and insiders of financial institutions of the EU - Member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank, Jörg Asmussen, Chairman of the Eurogroup Thomas Wieser, and former head of the Cabinet of the President of the European Council, Baron Frans van Daele, head of the Brussels think tank Bruegel, Jean Pisani-Ferry and Vice-President of the Commission Šefčovič. The event was held under the patronage of Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Peter Kazimir.

The two-day international conference on the future of the euro zone was the largest of its kind to date in the Slovak Republic. The euro area has been undergoing the most serious crisis since its foundation. The ambition of the conference was to launch a broader public and professional debate about proposed solutions to the crisis in the EU, which was still lacking in the region. Another objective of the event was to discuss the policy challenges and risks of new EU measures aiming to enhance the competitiveness of national economies through closer and more effective cooperation between Member States in the field of economic governance, fiscal policy and banking supervision.
