Central and Eastern Europe: Coping with external headwinds

In mid-2012, three and a half years after the global financial crisis erupted, Central and Eastern European members of the EU, plus the soon-to-be member Croatia, are yet again faced with serious external shocks. What are the growth prospects of the region amidst the lingering crisis of the euro area? How should governments, central banks and supervisory authorities of the region respond to the volatile international environment? What is the optimal speed of fiscal consolidation? What kind of structural policies can support economic growth? These and other questions were analysed at the presentation of the current issue of the biannual EU11 Regular Economic Report of the Europe and Central Asia Region of the World Bank, titled ‘Coping with external headwinds’, which, for the first time, includes Croatia as well with a view to its expected EU entry in July 2013.
