Can Europe build a Capital Markets Union without a strong European markets supervisor?
Invitation only event to discuss Europe’s Capital Markets Union.
Advancing Europe’s Capital Markets Union project is a matter of at least rhetorical consensus, but the issue of supervisory architecture – principally, whether to elevate ESMA to an effective and independent markets supervisor – remains controversial, as illustrated by the NextCMU (“Wieser”) report of October 2019 which could not reach a common view on it. This session will be an opportunity to further explore the related policy and political trade-offs.
This event will feature an interactive discussion with Stephane Boujnah, CEO and Chairman of the Managing Board at EuroNext; and Jan Pieter Krahnen, Professor of Finance from Goethe University’s House of Finance and Scientific Director from Leibniz Institute for Financial Research SAFE. The conversation will be chaired by Nicolas Véron.
This event is open only to Bruegel’s Members and select experts.
