Why think tanks matter to policy makers and the public

Bruegel is pleased to host this panel discussion as part of the global launch of the 2015 Global Go To Think Tank Index, published by the University o

Bo Qian

Minister-Counselor, Mission of the People's Republic of China to the European Union,

In comparison with parliaments, universities and state bureaucracies, think tanks are a fairly recent phenomenon in the policy landscape. But in the past few decades, their growth has been nothing short of explosive. Still, the relationship between these organisations and the policy making process is not completely understood, and there is little concrete information about their impact on policy and the public.

This panel discussion will address the growing importance of think tanks around the world.

  • How do think tanks contribute to public and specialist policy debates?
  • What unique challenges do these organisations face?
  • Why are many countries trying to support the emergence of a domestic think tank sector?
