The future of European finance depends on reducing fragmentation within the single market. In a recently published Bruegel blueprint, “Breaking the Deadlock: a single supervisor to unshackle Europe’s capital markets union,” Nicolas Véron argues that well-designed reforms should augment the European Securities and Markets Authority and reduce the role of national authorities. Such a supercharged ESMA would boost confidence in the EU as a whole as well as the 21-country euro area. This event put these recommendations in context of latest policy developments.
