Investment patterns across Europe remain uneven, with consequences for competitiveness and convergence. Europe’s growth model is being redefined — and energy is at the core of that transformation. Another issue is how once seen mainly as a cost and a vulnerability, energy now has to become a foundation for competitiveness, resilience, and sustainable growth. In addition, Europe faces a changing global landscape of geopolitical fragmentation, climate constraints, and rising competition.
At this event, held in Athens, the speakers discussed how industrial policy can promote business investment — including R&D — and how to ensure that capital flows translate into productivity growth rather than simply higher spending. Moreover, what kind of growth model can deliver security, sustainability, and competitiveness, and what reforms and investments are needed at both EU and national level to make it happen. Ultimately, takeaways on how to align policy, investment, and reform to deliver lasting transformation — with a focus on priorities for both national and EU decision-makers were given.
In the frame of Bruegel's 20th Anniversary celebrations we are organising a series of events in our members states, to bring important European conversations to the capitals and hear views from national policy makers and experts on potential challenges and solutions.
