The role of science and innovation in sustainable growth

This event marked the launch of the OECD’s new publication Measuring Science and Innovation for Sustainable Growth, with a presentation of its key findings.

The transformational power of science, technology and innovation (STI) can be the cornerstone of a successful transition that allows to best reconcile decarbonisation, competitive value creation and jobs, and strategic autonomy at global scale. Europe will need the innovation system at full capacity to deliver improved and new technology solutions. Unfortunately, we cannot just wait for cleaner technologies. A  timely and effective clean STI machine needs to supported and directed by government interventions that will address the various market failures at different points in the lab-to-use pipeline. What have we learned so far from measuring and analysing the performance of  STI for sustainable growth? Is policy at the right direction and speed or do we need to more and better?

At this event, we presented and examined new and comprehensive evidence on the role of science and innovation for environmental sustainability to provide recommendations for policy. It drew on existing and newly developed databases and indicators and analysis to map key trends, comparing the position of the EU and other regions.
