Reconfiguring Europe in a changing world

At this closed-door event, we will discuss two recent contributions on Europe’s economic and geopolitical challenges.
The inaugural 2026 Florence Report, Reconfiguring Europe in a fractured global economy, by Marco Buti, Giancarlo Corsetti and Anna Peychev, examines how profound shifts in the global economic and geopolitical landscape are reshaping the foundations of European integration. It argues that Europe can no longer rely on the external conditions that long supported its prosperity and security, including stable multilateral institutions, open global markets and external security guarantees.
We will also discuss Eurosclerosis 2.0: In a Changing World, Can Europe once again rise to the occasion? by Pierre Wunsch, Governor of the National Bank of Belgium, which focuses on Europe’s weakening productivity and competitiveness and the need for structural reform in an increasingly fragmented global economy.
The discussion will reflect on how these perspectives inform Europe’s economic governance, competitiveness and strategic autonomy going forward.
