Europeans still support climate action but they increasingly doubt their governments’ ability to deliver an effective and fair green transition, according to recent survey and focus group research. In all socio-economic groups and among all voters for traditional parties, people want governments to reduce climate change as well as to adapt to it, even though worries about security and the cost of living now top their list of concerns. Populist and far-right efforts have amplified scepticism among politically disaffected citizens, who feel excluded from decision-making about the green transition. Delay and hesitation among political leaders on climate policies increase doubts about their competence rather than reassuring voters. At this event, we will discuss how to rebuild public trust, engage with voters’ concerns, and ensure a fair and effective green transition amidst rising economic and security concerns.
