Mario Soares

Member of the European Economic and Social Committee - EESC,

Born on 8 March 1952, married with two children.

Teacher of Portuguese and French language and literature.

Mr Soares has been a union leader since 1982, was president of the Northern Teachers' Union and founder member of the National Teachers' Federation and is currently President of the Federation's National Council, which is the organisation's supreme body.

He is a member of the National Council of the General Confederation of Portuguese Workers (CGTP-IN), working specifically in the confederation's international department.

Mr Soares was the auditor of the national defence course promoted by Portugal's Ministry of Defence and the National Defence Institute.

He was a member of the executive bureau of the European Trade Union Committee for Education and regularly represents the CGTP on the executive bureau of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC).

He has been a Member of the European Economic and Social Committee since 2000, is involved in the SOC and REX sections, is a member of the Latin America Follow-up Committee and is currently a member of the EESC Bureau.
