Luis Portero

Policy Coordinator for trade relations with Japan, European Commission, DG TRADE,

Mr. Luis Portero is currently Policy Coordinator for trade relations with Japan in the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Trade. He is in charge in particular of the new EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement.

Mr. Portero works since 2000 for the EU institutions, mainly in the area of international trade. His previous post was as Head of the Trade and Economic Section of the EU Delegation in the Russian Federation. During his career at the EU institutions, Mr. Portero has worked as legal adviser on trade policy and EU institutional issues, and policy officer for sustainable development matters. He also headed the Trade and Economic Section of the EU Delegation in Ukraine. M. Portero has taken part in the negotiation of trade agreements and in the adoption of trade legislation; he has managed trade disputes in the context of the WTO, and has represented the EU in multilateral and bilateral economic institutions.
