Bruegel annual meetings, 1-3 September 2020

On 1-3 September 2020 Bruegel held its Annual Meetings. During three days of online discussions we discussed the most urgent economic questions facing Europe and the world.

The world is currently facing an unprecedented challenge. In addition to wreaking havoc in our healthcare systems COVID-19 has also caused a sudden and unforeseen economic crisis. Governments around the world are struggling to safeguard jobs and livelihoods. Under these circumstances, will these same governments be able to keep earlier promises they made, such as combating climate change? Will the crisis hasten the changes to our working lives that were already on the horizon? The various responses around the world are also causing people to ask questions about privacy and democratic values. Once this crisis is over we will need an extensive recovery programme. But what kind of world do we want to return to? Is this the moment to re-think how we do things?
